Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Public policy awareness is crucial for ensuring that citizens are informed about government decisions and can actively engage in shaping policy outcomes. In Lapai Local Government Area, Niger State, the awareness of public policies has traditionally been limited due to challenges such as low literacy levels, geographic isolation, and inadequate access to information. Digital media, however, offers a unique opportunity to bridge these gaps by providing instant access to information on policy developments, government initiatives, and social programs. Social media platforms, mobile apps, and websites have become important channels for disseminating information, mobilizing public opinion, and encouraging civic engagement. According to Ibrahim and Abubakar (2024), digital media plays a pivotal role in enhancing public policy awareness by enabling citizens to access up-to-date information and engage in public debates. This study aims to assess the impact of digital media on public policy awareness in Lapai, focusing on how digital platforms contribute to informed civic participation and understanding of local and national policies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of digital media, public policy awareness remains limited in Lapai due to factors such as digital illiteracy, limited internet access, and a lack of targeted communication strategies. This study seeks to explore how digital media can be utilized to improve public policy awareness, with a focus on its effectiveness and reach in Lapai Local Government Area.
